Church of St. Sylvester Biševo

In 1050, the priest Ivan Gaudijev Grlić from Split built a church dedicated to St. Sylvester (314-355), the first pope in the history of Christianity who ensured that Christians could freely declare their faith.

Father Ivan donated the small church to the Benedictines from the Tremiti Islands (Isole Tremiti). Church of St. Sylvester was built in the pre-Romanesque style, but its original form was changed over the centuries. At the time of the creation of the church, the Benedictines arrived on the island and built their monastery near it.

During the first half of the 13th century, several donations to the Biševo monastery were recorded. In one of the grants next to the monastery of St. Sylvester, the monastery of St. Nicholas in Komiža (Muster), which was then only a branch of the Biševo Abbey.

In the second half of the 13th century, due to the danger of pirate attacks, the monks moved their headquarters to Vis, that is, to the monastery of St. Nicholas in Komiža.

Nowadays, once a year, on St. Sylvesters, which is the last day of the year, a holy mass is held in the church, followed by an appropriate celebration.

One of the oldest paintings of the Virgin Mary in Dalmatia, a work of Venetian painting from the 13th century (1220), the Madonna of Biševo, has been preserved in this small church. Today it is located in the cathedral of St. Stephen in the city of Hvar.
